Storm in Shetland

Before Storm Aiden hit Shetland i managed to get down to Scatness in the sun. The sea had been whipped up by a gale a day before but the sea was not as spectacular as expected

Looking across to Sumbugh Hotel
Looking south as the sun was setting with foam flying about

Waves coming about 1/2 way up the cliffs at Scatness

Dramatic lighting over the bolder strewn beach

The following day the storm hit with winds in excess of 60mph and heavy rain as well

The Aurora has shown well , join Shetland Aurora Hunter for more information

Sanick, Shetland

Enjoyable walk round Sanick a small part of Sandwick. The weather was beautiful with very little wind

Circular part of the walk

From Thursday we can at last go a bit further a field, so hoping we can get down to Sumburgh providing weather is ok.

Looks like a lot of holiday companies have already gone bust with more to come. No ferries or planes as yet. Still a number of folk waiting to move to Shetland, some without jobs and one couple has resold their house twice since the lock down.

Food supplies seem ok but the number of folk going to the supermarket has increased at the time we go. Some shops planning to open soon, just wonder how many will be left. Schools too, although many parents have reservations about sending their children.

Lets hope there is no second spike we all want to get back to normal as soon as possible, will miss our trip south this year.

Scalloway Up Helly Aa 2021 has already been cancelled, a lot of work goes into building the galley and preparing the outfits and as no one will have been able to attend the meetings not enough time will be left to get things ready. Is that the first of many?

I still dont know when I can restart delivering the photography courses, one is half finished but it could be the end of the year before I recommence.

Grutness, Shetland

Grutness is one of our favourite places to visit in the south mainland

Hidden away is the sunked garden on the way up to Sumburgh head full of colour in summer

lots of gardens cannot grow many plants because of the strong winds and salt in the air, but this one is sheltered even though its very close to the sea. Good for migrant birds in spring and autumn

The freshwater pool at Grutness holds many waders and duck as well as the watering hole for the several shetland ponies

working our way passed the garden and up to the lower side of Compass Head

Looking out over the boulders towards the point, a nesting place for Common Gull and Arctic Terns while in winter small flocks of Snow Bunting are usually seen

Looking north from Compass Head with Sumburgh hotel on the left and beyond the beach on the right, Sumburgh airport
