May in Shetland

This week has been very changeable, anything from snow, hail, heavy rain, sun and cold temperatures

The cloud formations at anytime of year add a lot to any photo, the one above looking east towards Bressay

Looking north towards Littleness at Spiggie

The croft above had just delivered 20 lambs today but this little one only 2 hours old felt the cold until it gained some body heat

Also lots of Shetland Pony foals especially in south mainland

Had a trip north to Voe, cut short with heavy rain but managed to have a walk through the village

Interesting to see all the mussel shells on top of an overturned boat

A view of Scalloway, a regular view on my way to work each morning

This month, on the 17 May 2019 is Norwegian day and a large crowd always gathers for a service to remember the Shetland Bus men that lost their lives during WW2

Shetland Bus memorial, Main Street , Scalloway

This building at Twageos in Lerwick may be familiar, it was used as a B&B in the recent BBC1 Shetland drama. This is actually South Ness House built in 1902 and is now up for sale at £525,000

Always worth stopping to look at the seas at Reawick, the seas are absolutely stunning

Jarlsoff, a very popular destination with tourists

Burgi Iron Age Fort

After having temps of 14 degrees earlier in the week this weekend has gone very cold and down to 3 degrees with occasional snow and hail showers with strong winds

If you walk out from Scatness to Burgi, you have an easy walk for most of the way. There is plenty to look at with many Second World War remains and lochs holding many birds

Looking west from Burgi as the Norrona heads north from Norway to Iceland, now it no longer calls in Shetland which is a great shame

The Iron Age Fort at Burgi

Looking south east towards Sumburgh Head

Remains of the Fort

The Fort is about 1 mile SW of Scatness carpark, on flat ground for the most although you will have to go along a rocky area using a metal chain for support. Its well worth the trip at any time of year.

Looking back towards Scatness

I now have my Canvas and mounted prints for sale in Hoswick visitors centre which has just reopened after a major refurbishment. See www.amazingshetland.co.uk

Old Shetland boat

Shetland is a great mix of old and new and round every corner there is something interesting to see and photograph

I live in Sandwick and we have many little places such as Sandsayre, Sanick, Hoswick, Clumliewick and Stove that collectively make up the area

This boat has been here for a few years now and is just left to rot, such a pity but along with the abandoned cars there is really no where to send them to be scrapped.

Over the years Clumliewick Pier has been battered by numerous Hurricanes and strong gales and now its just given up and collapsed into the sea.

Remains of a few old houses and crofts survived, it seems everyone wants new houses. Lots of new ones have been built since we arrived just over 5 years ago.

Don't forget to have a look at my other blogs

Travelling no more in Shetland

I like Shetland as it has a lot of Old historical items, some however are items that have been left to rust in the wet salty air.

These two coaches have been in Sandwick for a few years now and you can tell they haven't moved in years. Broken and battered by numerous storms they lay waiting until they no longer can be recognised.

Its not just these coaches, abandon cars lay to rust in many spots as there is  no scrappage in Shetland at present.

Spring is passing fast, daffodils are up in number and add a splash of colour to roadside verges, bees and hedgehogs are out earlier than normal while daisies seem never to have disappeared from last year.

Clouds roll passed quickly in the storms, Haily Puckles (Hail showers) come heavy then the sun shines, its a season of change.

Chances to see the Aurora (see facebook- Shetland Aurora Hunter) are slowly disappearing as the nights draw out and birds like the Skylark are in full song.

The Threat from Wind Turbines gets stronger as the council approve more sites, the latest at Mossy Hill between Lerwick and Scalloway. Its only the interconnector standing in the way although the MOD still will have a say, lets hope it never gets the go ahead.

Popular Shetland

Shetland has been featured on TV a lot this last few months

The most popular is the BBC1 drama Shetland which had 4.7 Million viewers making it no 2 in the viewing charts. Must say I am impressed with this series lets hope its not the last.

Others include Wild Shetland with some great footage of the Aurora, Otters and Orcas, the medics, and recently on STV the  All Aboard covering the Hrossay  the ferry between Shetland and Aberdeen. Live streams of the Lerwick and South Mainland Up Helly Aa's should also be included.

This is all good publicity for Shetland and this year we are expecting many more visitors than last year. We have three lots of visitors due this year, one couple making their first ever visit.
